A mighty fine '74 home game.
This show is kind of it's own little entity; I can't really lump it in with the May West Coast run or the famous June tour. Supposedly there were 30,000

attendees at this show, but you'd never know it from this recording. Bob's banter is borderline nonchalant, and the performance is so loose and fluid you'd swear it was from was a smaller Fall '73 arena gig rather than a big stadium gig. The band's comfort level can likely be chalked up to the fact that this was a summer home game. Hot Bay Area weather, in a Bay Area venue, with Bay Area fans. On 6/8/74, they were very much "in the spirit" of every song they played, and they didn't treat any of them as mere filler tunes. Scarlet is punchy and energetic, Roses is slow, secretive and relinquished, Tennessee Jed is twangy, and Greatest story is extra gooey, rocking out into one of the better crescendos this song ever had. While the moods and lyrics of these songs are all very different, they give each one the fully focused attention it deserves before moving on to the next number and switching vibe, time signature, key, etc. No song is phoned in. They live the lyrics and serve the stories each and every time, something you'll find a lot in '74. The rare Playin' > Wharf Rat > Playin' sandwich (perhaps the only one ever?) deservedly piques a lot of interest. This is the darkest Playing in the Band I've ever heard. In the absence of a big Dark Star, Other One, or Truckin', they decide to infect PITB with some very chaotic, almost sinister trickery. It's one of those jams that's so out there you can't decide if it's terrible or ingenious. Jerry applies the slide to Wolf for a sublime jam out of Wharf Rat into the sunnier Playin' reprise, and the rest of the show is all laughter and sunshine. Lots of patches, but still a great recording. This show is very unique. It was the only one they had on the calendar for a week or two in either direction. Between their chameleon-like adaptation from one song to next and clever setlist maneuvers like serving up Brown-Eyed Women as the 2nd song of the night and dishing out a Playin' sandwich, this is a shining example of the GD applying their unparalleled trade for the Bay Area faithful on a sunny summer day.

A damn good case of the Mexicali Blues
Almost all Sounboards from 1974 are going to be in the 4 to 5 star range, Probably not worth quibbling about. If you saw this live you have all the rest

of us beat: Oakland Coliseum GRATEFUL DEAD 2 MOTHER NATURE 3 Greatest Story is BLAZING! Donna Jean helps the MOJO along. Feeling groovy jam.. Phil's vocals-I Know you rider. AROUNDx2 in 1st set closer spot! If you think Donna can get fiesty? Check out Weir on Around & Around. Set TWO : This would be back in the days before the Oakland Coliseum was completely closed in with seating. I know that they needed the extra seating for football but it sure took away something from that Stadium. Anyway U.S. Blues-short compact, nice in the opener good piano work Big River-What a hot 2nd set tune this was Ship of Fools-dialing it down, so nobody falls off the 2nd deck.( Donna Jean backing vocals) Major highlight: Playing>Wharf Rat>Playing Some great leads first from Phil then from Garcia with a very busy Krutzman to boo. 15 minutes in we get the full MELTDOWN. Such a nice acid jazz PITB.. If I was going to compare this favorable with another show:6/22/74-Miami- (first night)

PITB!
This Playin' goes totally off the hook at about 14:30, fantastic, which a number of unique features. A hugely underrated show.
More people should know about this one. It's basically in the same league as shows like 5/25, 6/20, or 7/29, what I would call the "2nd tier" of great

'74 shows, but is horribly under reviewed. GSET is awesome (if you can tune out some horrendous donna wails). The Playin and Eyes are both monsters too - especially Playin, which may be the best unsung version of the year. This version has an absolutley demented Tiger/Feedback section with Jerry and Phil going nuts. Not to mention it segues in and out of a beautiful Wharf Rat. The Scarlet and China>Rider are both very strong as well. Overall, this is a very good show worth adding to your collection.
